Couvade - by Nick Clements   for Juno Magazine

Couvade was a rite of passage undertaken by the father before and during the first days of his child's birth.  It was performed on every continent and was particularly strongly upheld in the Basque and Celtic regions, only dying out in the late 1800's and since then it has been buried.  Nick seeks to re-examine the practice and to develop a new way of introducing it to our present culture.

The Invisible People
Films about fathers by Nick Clements
Available in DVD format
Two films about being a father in the Rhondda Valleys of South Wales.  They enable the fathers to tell their own stories, reflecting the love and commitment they have to their children, despite tough personal situations.

The Superdads of Penpych
A film about the historical context of fatherhood in the Valleys.  Exploring the way fathers were, and the social and cultural trends which have affected a huge change in attitudes and behaviours by present day fathers.  They are now much more engaged and in Penpych become involved in an after-school class to spend quality time with their children.   17 minutes

Dad Matters
Explains the development of a fathers group in the Valleys.  How it evolved and how it has benefited those fathers taking part.  The fathers show how it
has affected them, their children and their partners. Individuals share their life experiences, tell their stories, and talk about their wishes for their children in the future.   20 minutes
